  • Smoking Kills, Nicotine Doesn’t!

In the past few decades, few medical professionals have done more to fight tobacco companies and eliminate smoking than Dr Derek Yach, a former professor at Yale University.  Dr Yach was instrumental in developing the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and has plenty of experience battling big tobacco companies in courts and the media.

The good doctor recently shocked his former allies at the WHO however when he came out in support of e-cigarettes and vaping.  In an article on Spectator Health, Dr Yach presses the facts that can’t be ignored; namely that more people have been able to quit smoking than from any other alternative therapy and that all scientific studies indicate that nicotine itself is not the cause of disease in tobacco.

Strangely, there are a number of lobbyist influences in the WHO that are fighting the vape movement at the behest of either their allegiance to big tobacco, their ignorance in the face of evidence, or both.

    He states:

Why are we in this position? One reason is that governments have become addicted to tobacco excise tax and may fear that, as e-cigs take off, they will lose a valuable source of revenue. Many leading NGOs and academics exert strong influence at WHO, within governments, in the media and among the general public. In the past, they helped bring tobacco control out of the shadows and into the mainstream of health policy. Now, alas, their intransigence threatens more profound progress.

He goes on to quote the Royal College of Physicians:

Switching completely from tobacco to e-cigarettes achieves much the same in health terms as does quitting smoking and all nicotine use completely. Furthermore… risks associated with passive exposure to e-cigarette vapour are far less than those associated with passive exposure to tobacco smoke.

It’s more clear than ever that e-cigs and vaping are a real threat to the high-powered tobacco industry that has profited enormously from the public health crisis caused by addictive, poisonous, and deadly cigarette products the world over.
